Barolo 2017 Perno single vineyard cru — A Vintage Redeemed
The critics called 2017 “good but not great.” A hot, uneven year. A vintage that humbled many winemakers in Piemonte.
But it’s vintages like these that separate the lucky from the great.
At Perno in Monforte d’Alba, the Grasso family trusted no one else. Only family members walked the rows. Only their hands chose the clusters. Each basket filled with judgment born of blood, memory, and pride. That harvest—intimate, deliberate—made all the difference.
The vineyard itself has stories: old vines from the 1950s, a chapel standing watch, once tended by Don Conterno, the parish priest. From this land came a Barolo perfumed with roses and herbs, layered with cherry, plum, smoke, and spice.
The tannins are noble, commanding yet balanced. The fragrance lingers long after the glass is empty.
This was not luck. This was winemaking. Slowly fermented, aged years in oak, bottled by the moon, unfiltered and unhurried. Just a few thousand bottles.
2017 may have been demanding. But in the hands of the Grasso family, it became unforgettable.
